  22. Reports from User-Doc and NISI

  24. Tracy LaQuey announced that the User-Doc Bibliography is ready for the
  25. Internet Draft Process.  Final changes or amendments to the Bibliography
  26. have a deadline date of May 15th.  After the Internet-Draft process then
  27. the RFC FYI publication, the User-Doc WG will terminate and go back into
  28. the USWG.

  30. Dana Sitzler updated the USWG group on NISI acitvities.  NISI's first
  31. meeting focused on discussion of the old NISI charter and a survey of
  32. ``where we are now'' (i.e., a survey of existing informational types,
  33. retrieval mechanisms, and current NIC specialties and relationships).
  34. Specifically, how to get information to people.  A draft will be sent to
  35. the NISI mailing list.

  37. Distribution and Announcement Handbook
  38.  
  39. Bob Enger presented the DAWG document to the USWG.
  40.

  42.    o The immediate role of the IETF in broadly distributing information
  43.      to the Internet community is to make use of communications avenues
  44.      already developed by other organizations.
  45.    o The purpose of this handbook is to:  1) identify and provide
  46.      specifics on various existing distribution resources, and to 2)
  47.      consider possible long term distribution methods.
  48.    o The intent is for this to be a handbook that can be used by all the
  49.      IETF Working Groups to announce and/or distribute their documents
  50.      as their charters dictate.
  51.    o There had been some question at the Tallahassee meeting whether
  52.      DAWG should be in the USWG or NISI realm.  It was decided that this
  53.      handbook will stay with the USWG.

  74. Discussion shifted to queries about, ``Do we need to make this handbook
  75. an RFC??''  The general concensus is that the DAWG handbook will be an
  76. IETF internal document only, specifically to help the IETF Area
  77. Directors and IETF WG Chairs ``get the word out'', beyond the normal
  78. distribution via RFC memos.

  80. Quail Report

  82. Gary Malkin was unable to attend at the very last minute, so Joyce
  83. Reynolds presented his report.
  84.  
  85.    o Concern was expressed about authoritative answers.
  86.    o Questions shoud be generalized, so should answers.
  87.    o If answers are not definitve, the answer should not be given.  We
  88.      should bring the asker up to speed and then point him/her in the
  89.      right direction for further information.
  90.    o There should be an update plan.  Gary has planned to do so, at each
  91.      IETF plenary.
  92.    o The Q/A draft document needs to be restructured.

  94. The input from this discussion will be reported to Gary...further
  95. discussion will take place on the Quail mailing list.

  97. ``Intro Packages'' - a new user electronic application
  98.  
  99. Continued discussion from last USWG meeting on what the information is
  100. going to be, what already exists, and what needs to be defined.

  102. Additional research is needed.  Martyne Hallgren, Karen Roubicek, and
  103. Joyce Reynolds will do further research and report at the next USWG
  104. session.
